Nicaragua is promoting a national strategy to transform waste into economic opportunities and sustainable ventures, with the participation of institutions, local governments and communities.

The strategy was announced during the National Congress “Recycling to Transform Waste into Opportunities,” promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Marena), which advocated for actions to strengthen the circular economy and turn waste into opportunities for sustainable ventures.

Managua Mayor Reyna Rueda said the municipality’s initiatives are part of the national strategy and highlighted the support provided over the years to entrepreneurs dedicated to recycling.

Among the main municipal initiatives, she mentioned the Floating School, an environmental education program supported by Japan that has served more than six thousand primary school students in the municipality. She also highlighted the Ecomóvil Program, an awareness initiative that has made more than 180,000 house-to-house visits to promote proper solid waste management.

The mayor also reported that the municipal treatment plant processes more than 1,500 tons of waste daily. The collection and treatment service reaches all seven districts of Managua and extends to neighboring municipalities such as Ticuantepe and El Crucero.

“Now we are talking about small businesses through the treatment of the waste we generate,” Rueda said, stressing that environmental management requires the joint participation of institutions and the population to guarantee a healthy environment for future generations.
