In the wake of their losses against the New People’s Army (NPA) in Baybay City, Leyte, the 93rd Infantry Battalion under their commanding officer Lt. Col. Celeste Sayson has taken up the National Task Force-Elcac playbook of targeting and harassing the children of Red fighters.

This is what they have recently done to the 7-year old child of martyred people’s warrior Edwin Maceda (Ka Romnik). Instead of leaving her to mourn the death of her father, they have taken to social media to parade the minor. They are also using her to pressure her mother who is a Red fighter still in active duty, as well as the child’s grandmother acting as guardian.

We vehemently condemn these attacks by the 93rd IB on children and minors. These are not isolated incidents; these are part of systemic attacks on a vulnerable sector and form part of fascist state terrorism in the Eastern Visayas countryside. It is no coincidence that in 2024, troops of the 74th IB kidnapped several minors of the Arnesto family in Palapag to be placed under military custody; in 2025, the 63rd IB strafed and killed a 15-year old in Borongan City, and earlier this year, troops of the 43rd IB harassed minors of the Yanay family in Las Navas. These constitute some of the worst violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

It is clear that it is the fascist state and their military that are exposing the youth to nonsense violence. Lt. Col. Sayson and his sort must immediately stay away from Maceda’s child and stop using her for their malicious purposes. We also call on fellow human rights and child’s rights advocates to look into this case as well as the various other attacks on children and minors in the region.
