Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended the principles and ambitions that inspired the creation of the UN more than eight decades ago, delivering a forceful argument before the United Nations General Assembly against policies aimed at dismantling the multilateral order, and warning that Spain “will not be silent.”
Although he did not mention the U.S. president, Sánchez structured his intervention around direct criticism of the actions being carried out by Trump and other allied Governments described as “reactionary,” aimed at dismantling the multilateral order.
“There is no need to point them out. We all know who they are and what their modus operandi is,” he said.

Addressing the recent irregular migration crisis in Ceuta, Sánchez assured that Spain has chosen to maintain legality, respect human rights and reject shortcuts based on fear. “Spain does not choose the easiest path. It chooses the fairest path,” he said.
“I rise to this podium with a single objective: to defend what many are trying to destroy. I come to reclaim the principles and ambitions that inspired the creation of this organization, 81 years ago. Principles and ambitions that several Governments present here despise and seek to dismantle,” Sánchez said during his address. He underscored that the UN Security Council must be overhauled to guarantee equitable representation across all regions and to abolish the permanent veto power held by its five permanent members.
