Argentine President Javier Milei delivered a strong message during the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing Argentina’s sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands and criticizing the UN’s ineffectiveness in resolving the dispute.
Argentinean President Javier Milei made a significant shift in his country’s foreign policy during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this Wednesday.
For the first time, Milei placed the sovereignty claim over the Malvinas Islands at the center of his international agenda, marking a departure from his previous stances on the issue.

In his address, Milei described the Malvinas as a “national cause” and criticized the lack of diplomatic progress in resolving the dispute with the United Kingdom.
“I want to ask a question: What good is a resolution if, for decades, the other party can act in the opposite direction? The UN today only serves to feed a caste of parasites,” Milei stated, highlighting the ineffectiveness of the UN in enforcing its resolutions.

Milei’s shift in rhetoric was noted by the Argentinean press, which pointed out that during his 2024 speech at the UN, he mentioned the Malvinas only once and briefly. This year, however, he dedicated a significant portion of his address to the sovereignty dispute, emphasizing the need for a more assertive approach.
The Argentinean President also condemned the UK’s activities in the South Atlantic, describing the oil and gas explorations authorized by London as “illegal and illegitimate.” He argued that the principle of self-determination invoked by the British does not apply in this case, as the island’s population was “implanted” in a territory that Argentina considers usurped.
Milei’s speech was part of a broader diplomatic effort to strengthen Argentina’s claim over the Malvinas. He called on the British government to resume bilateral negotiations to find a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute. Despite his critical tone, Milei concluded his remarks by urging the UK to engage in dialogue.

Milei’s Failed Meeting
Javier Milei’s diplomatic efforts were met with challenges. During his visit to New York, he attempted to arrange a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump but was unsuccessful.
The U.S. administration’s support for the UK’s position on the Malvinas dispute was evident in a meeting between Trump and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. “England is a special country. We support them fully,” Trump expressed. For his part, Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s stance. “We will remain firm against any threat. We will defend the right of the Falkland Islanders to self-determination and to remain British,” he declared.
Despite these setbacks, Milei’s speech underscored Argentina’s determination to assert its sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands. His strong rhetoric and call for action signal a new phase in Argentina’s long-standing dispute with the UK, one that emphasizes diplomatic pressure and a more assertive stance on the international stage.
