Mexican President will travel to Shenzhen to receive the handover to host the APEC summit in 2028.

On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that she will participate in the 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which will be held Nov. 18-19 in Shenzhen, in southern China.

“I’m going to China in November because that’s where we are going to receive the baton to hold the APEC summit in 2028,” she said during her morning news conference.

The announcement confirms her interest in strengthening her country’s ties with the 21 APEC economies, given that she has been very selective about attending international events.

Among Sheinbaum’s first international trips were attendance at the G20 summit in Brazil in November 2024; the meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Honduras in April 2025; and the G7 summit in Canada in June 2025.

She also held a trilateral meeting with the leaders of Guatemala and Belize in August 2025 and, later, in December, Sheinbaum also traveled to Washington for the draw for the 2026 World Cup, where she held her first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In 2026, Sheinbaum participated in the Summit for the Defense of Democracy held in Barcelona, Spain, in April and attended the final of the World Cup between Argentina and Spain in the United States in July.

Asked about her absence from the United Nations General Assembly, the Mexican leader explained Wednesday that she did not attend because she considered that “this was not a moment” to do so, although she did not detail her reasons, and recalled that she also did not participate in 2025.

After Trump called Mexico the ‘epicenter of the cartels’ at the United Nations, President Sheinbaum appealed to the good relationship between the two leaders and responded with irony: ‘I could say that it is very difficult to live next to a country with such high drug consumption… but I’m not going to say that’.”

APEC Shapes Economic Cooperation Across the Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a regional economic forum established in 1989 to strengthen economic cooperation among economies across the Asia-Pacific. It began with 12 founding members meeting in Canberra, Australia, and has since expanded to 21 member economies, including the U.S., China, Japan, Russia, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Chile, Peru and Vietnam.

APEC’s agenda centers on trade and investment liberalization, economic integration, business facilitation and economic and technical cooperation. Unlike organizations based on treaties and binding obligations, APEC operates through voluntary commitments, dialogue and consensus. Its leaders began meeting annually in 1993, and in 1994 they adopted the Bogor Goals, which set the objective of achieving free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific.

The forum has become an important platform for addressing economic issues affecting a region that includes some of the world’s largest economies and trading partners. APEC’s work encompasses areas such as supply chains, digital trade, connectivity, sustainable growth, innovation and the movement of goods, services and investment across borders.

In 2026, China is hosting APEC, with the year’s meetings focused on advancing regional cooperation under the theme “Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together.” The APEC summits will be held in Vietnam in 2027 and Mexico in 2028.
