Colombia had a pro-Palestine stance under ex-president Gustavo Petro whereas Abelardo de la Espriella has vowed to "stand with Israel"

Colombia has withdrawn its support for South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The move comes under the country’s new, far-right president Abelardo de la Espriella, whose election win followed hacking, tampering and rigging by Israeli firms. Espriella is also closely aligned with the Trump regime.

An official press release from the International Court of Justice, dated 22 September 2026, stating 'Colombia withdraws its Declaration of intervention in the proceedings' regarding the 'Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v Israel)'.

While his predecessor Gustavo Petro was a firm opponent of Israel and its Gaza genocide, Espriella has vowed to “stand with Israel“. His ‘win’ fits into a widening pattern of election interference by Israel and the US to replace opponents in office with puppets and collaborators.

Trump is also waging war on the ICJ’s sister court, the International Criminal Court (ICC), over the ICC’s arrest warrants for Israeli war criminals.

The US has sanctioned a number of the court’s judges and officials. It is also now preparing to sanction the court itself in an attempt to disable it financially to prevent it carrying out its duties.
