RIO DE JANEIRO, BRASIL - As the Brazilian intelligence agency ABIN warns of Trump’s attempt to interfere in the Brazilian elections, Brazilian President Lula took to the United Nations today to rally global support against Trump’s interference.
“Democracy is once again under threat,” said Lula. “We are once again witnessing external interference in electoral processes, neocolonial drives for strategic resources.”
In recent months, Trump has tried to influence elections in various allied countries. His agents have sought to train influencers and right-wing journalists in how to spread fake news online.
Trump has repeatedly accused the Brazilian government of protecting drug traffickers and sought to label two major gangs as terrorists, a move that the Lula Administration has resisted for a variety of complex reasons. This past Thursday, the Trump Administration declared that Brasil was a “global cocaine distribution center.”
Additionally, Trump has placed tariffs on Brasil for convicting former president Jair Bolsonaro for attempting to assassinate Lula and overthrow the Brazilian government.
With the first round of Brazilian presidential elections just 12 days away, Lula said Trump’s threat would not deter him and was willing to fight back.
“In Latin America and the Caribbean, proximity to the world’s greatest power is inescapable. Brasil does not fit in anyone’s backyard,” said Lula. “We are called upon to choose between multilateralism and unilateralism. Sovereignty or subordination.”
In addition to rallying international support at the U.N., Lula used the opportunity to meet with leading figures of the U.S. left, including socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. While the US media has largely ignored the presidential election in Brazil, Mamdani’s meeting with Lula went viral across the left in the United States.
The New York City Mayor exchanged soccer jerseys with Lula, giving him the jersey of Sáo Paulo’s Corinthians, a team famous for its role in helping to overthrow the dictatorship in Brazil in the 1980s. The two discussed strategies for mobilizing workers to fight against oligarchs.
"It was an honor to show how he was an inspiration to many of us to stand up for workers and those living in hardship," said Mamdani.
The 80-year-old Lula said that he was equally honored to meet the 34-year-old socialist Mayor.
“It is inspiring to see a new generation stepping forward with the determination to transform reality,” said Lula.
