As the US pushes forward with its genocidal economic war on Cuba, Donald Trump has forced the UN to listen to his anti-communist propaganda.
The US war to impose ‘freedom’ on Cuba (and the world)
After over six decades of US economic terrorism and a recent escalation of collective punishment against the Caribbean island’s population, Trump called Cuba an “absolutely failed state”. Adding that he would use “military might” to get his way in Latin America if necessary, he promised ominously that:
freedom will be coming to Cuba
By freedom, we can only assume that he means his regime’s freedom to: attack international law; suppress critical journalism; assassinate people at sea; abduct presidents to steal oil; participate in genocidal colonial wars; starve entire islands in the interests of private profit; and interfere in foreign elections.
Trump also used his UN speech to claim the International Criminal Court (ICC) was “full of evil people”, presumably because it has dared to challenge US ally Benjamin Netanyahu over his genocide in Gaza. And he hinted that:
safety and security will be coming to Mexico
Amid a major imperialist escalation in Latin America that has resurrected talk of communism to justify new crimes against anyone seeking peace or justice, Mexico’s current government is one of the only left-leaning forces remaining. So Trump’s mention may suggest the country is next on his list after he finishes with Cuba.
Trump’s strangling of Cuba’s population continues
At the UN, Trump again echoed empty claims that Cuba is somehow a unique threat to continental security and stability. Cuban officials have called these claims an “absurd” effort to distract from the very clear aggression the island has long faced from the world’s most powerful nation.
As the Trump regime has increasingly strangled the Cuban people in the interest of private profit (and natural resources), Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has suggested the multidimensional US war is “becoming a genocide”. UN experts have already expressed concern that the US could be creating a “silent Gaza” in Cuba by taking steps that:
knowingly deprive a population of the means to survive
In particular, the Trump regime has brought Cuba’s universal health system and vital tourist industry to their knees. It has also sought to isolate the island from other Latin American nations, which have increasingly fallen under the control of pro-Trump right wingers.
The tightening US chokehold has intensified a shortage of food, medicine, and money (with those unable to access US dollars facing particular difficulties). And millions of people routinely lack electricity because of the US oil blockade. Energy independence has long eluded the island, and its recent solar power revolution hasn’t yet been able to cover people’s needs.
While the Cuban government insists that state influence in key sectors will continue, the US asphyxiation campaign has pushed it to pass more economic reforms in recent months than at any other point since the island’s 1959 revolution.
Sanctions are economic warfare and hurt ordinary people the most
The US has continued to ramp up an already brutal sanctions regime on Cuba. And this is despite experts long arguing that sanctions amount to economic warfare, creating damage equivalent to that resulting from conventional wars and hurting ordinary people a lot more than the governments they aim to topple.
Sanctions are a key weapon for the US and the Trump regime in particular, whether they target Iran, Venezuela, Russia, or the ICC.
Cuban health officials had already insisted in the past that longstanding US sanctions on the island constitute “an act of genocide“. And with the escalating human suffering in Cuba resulting from the ongoing escalation of the genocidal US stranglehold, there’s no wonder the Trump regime is so intent on destroying the idea of international accountability.
