Community members gathered in vigil for a second night in support of Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez, the 28-year-old Austin resident who was shot in the back of the neck by ICE agents on Sunday afternoon while delivering a Door Dash order in North Austin. Garcés Pérez was transferred back to the hospital on Monday night after experiencing paralysis on his left side. He had initially been hospitalized after he was shot, but was released into ICE custody with the bullet still lodged near his spine. When he asked if the bullet would be removed, the doctor told him "they’re in a hurry to get you out of here.” He told organizers and reporters by phone on Sunday that he did not receive medical attention that evening. He recounted that an unmarked ICE vehicle sideswiped his car before agents confronted him, in an account that contradicts Austin police, who said he was shot during a foot pursuit. He said the agents did not identify themselves and that he was shot while still in his vehicle.
