On Tuesday, North Korea sent its Vice Foreign Minister, Kim Son-gyong, to the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, amid expectations of contact between the Asian country and the United States.

The vice minister departed from Pyongyang at the head of a delegation, while South Korean media reported that he is expected to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
North Korea had stopped sending high-ranking officials to the Assembly after the failed summit between President Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019.
Kim Son-gyong’s address is scheduled for September 28, according to the official UN calendar. The trip comes amid strengthening ties between Pyongyang and China, and following Trump’s statements about his “very good relationship” with Kim Jong-un.

Trump raised the possibility of another meeting with Kim Jong-un after reducing joint military exercises with South Korea. U.S. and South Korean forces were expected to practice joint operations in complex scenarios, including a live-fire exercise to test precision targeting and maneuver.
Since returning to office, Trump has expressed interest in continuing discussions with the North Korean President. In September 2025, Kim said he held “good personal memories” of Trump and suggested he could return to talks.
Contacts with representatives of North Korea’s allies, such as Cuba and Venezuela, are also anticipated during the multilateral meeting. The General Assembly brings together heads of state, government, and high-ranking officials from dozens of countries, providing a key forum for international diplomacy.
