Die Linke, Germany’s most leftwing party, has emerged victorious in Berlin’s state elections. It puts Elif Eralp on course to potentially become Berlin’s next mayor, with many commentators drawing comparisons between her and Zohran Mamdani. While Mamdani has delivered rent freezes for a million rent-stabilised apartments in New York, Die Linke has pledged a one year rent freeze on public housing. But Eralp’s party has gone even further, planning to expropriate thousands of private properties from real estate companies to help lower rents.
