Having engaged with Your Party from the start, people in the north London borough of Enfield now have their own official branch. And they have “some great events and meetings” ahead, according to branch officer Khalid Sadur.

Doing politics differently in Enfield and beyond

Your Party Enfield has just held its inaugural branch meeting, and will have officer elections before launching local activities. In a 19 September press release, the branch insisted that change “comes from neighbours standing together” and “communities organising”. And it said the newest national party in the borough is being:

built from the ground up to do politics differently

That, it stressed, means:

We are not here to simply replicate the old way of doing things.

As Sadur told the Canary:

We have some great events and meetings planned, which will not only educate but also enthuse people to get involved.

Labour and the Tories have taken votes for granted in our borough and it is time we had a party which placed residents first.

Speaking about his hopes for what Your Party will offer locally, he added:

We are looking forward to seeing Your Party take hold in Enfield as we speak to those not only disillusioned with the mainstream parties but with politics in general.

It is important that people feel engaged with politics and see tangible benefits within the community.

Dozens of Your Party branches have already launched across Great Britain since June. And launches will continue to take place in the coming weeks. The Your Party website says branches will “prioritise participation and inclusion” and their visible “campaigning and solidarity“, being:

hubs for community organising, supporting the campaigns and struggles already happening on the ground where you live

Your Party: defeating and replacing Labour in Enfield

Independent socialists have been working hard in Enfield in recent years. And they have become a key opponent to the Labour-Tory axis in the borough. In May’s local election, however, a division of votes between independents and Greens meant Labour ended up with more seats than it should have.

Labour did lose overall control of Enfield in the election, and Greens gained five seats. But if progressives had coordinated according to their strengths in different wards, Labour could have easily lost even more councillors. With this in mind, the future relationship between Your Party Enfield and the Enfield Green Party will be key.

As Sadur told us previously, Enfield Community Independents had:

a really grassroots approach, where we literally brought people along and got them to vote for the first time

And he hopes that, ahead of the next general election, the two parties will be able to “put egos aside”, pool their expertise, and cooperate to take on the right.

In the meantime, Your Party Enfield will be ‘building from the ground up’ and seeking to enthuse people with political action that visibly benefits the community.
