A Venezuelan migrant was shot in the back by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop this Sunday in Austin, Texas.
The wounded man was identified as Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez, 28. Austin authorities said at a press conference that he was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso and was in serious condition.

Texas Congressman Greg Casar, writing on social media, demanded a full and independent investigation, the immediate release of body camera footage and accountability for any ICE agent who broke the law.

Casar accused ICE of having repeatedly shot people and then lying about what happened, saying the lies could be seen directly.
He further warned that citizens would respond with peaceful protests against what he described as a machinery for mass deportation, since ICE had terrorized the country for too long and that they would not remain silent.

The Sunday attack on Garcés adds to a series of questioned immigration operations that have left fatalities in the U.S. Multiple deaths have also been reported in custody at immigration detention centers nationwide, where at least 20 people have died in 2026.
