U.S. President Donald Trump said he welcomes a possible bilateral meeting with Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In an interview with a U.S. media outlet on Sunday, Sept. 20, Trump said he is at a decisive stage in defining Washington’s position on the war in West Asia. He said he is reviewing several operational options: tightening sanctions, pursuing the economic collapse of the Persian nation, using military force, or negotiating a formal agreement conditioned on a change in Tehran’s regional projection.

The White House’s position comes before a Tuesday meeting between the U.S. president and leaders of six Gulf nations. The meeting is intended to coordinate strategic political and military actions amid instability in the region and security challenges on trade routes.

Even so, the U.S. government ordered preventive alerts at its diplomatic missions in West Asia over a potential risk of military escalation. Trump also shortened his weekend activities.

Trump on Iran:

I am in a “deciding mode,” and very big things are going to be happening in the not-so-distant future.

The choices are: wiping Iran out, letting them rot economically, or making a deal.

In the regional operational scenario, the president confirmed that Washington maintains constant communication lines with the Houthi militias in Yemen. According to Trump, those groups agreed to avoid direct confrontations with U.S. forces.
