French President Emmanuel Macon and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney staged this Sunday the rapprochement between the European Union and Canada as a recipe for “growing threats” to each country’s sovereignty, in a speech delivered at Saint Pierre and Miquelon, the only French possession in North America.

“We support the rapprochement agenda in this future alliance” between Canada and the EU and the project of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for it to be part “of a European political community,” Macron assured.
He did so in a joint statement with Carney, the first Canadian head of government to visit this French territory of less than 6,000 inhabitants, which nonetheless places France in North America.
The Canadian Prime Minister also supported this rapprochement with Brussels, which he based on a common vision of democratic values and how to face major current crises, such as global warming, trade deregulation, or ongoing conflicts.

A joint message that comes after constant threats from US President Donald Trump to Canada’s sovereignty, to which others have recently been added regarding this small French possession in North America.
“Canada and France share the same view on the period we are going through. We are two great independent countries that want to remain so, we believe in democracy, the rule of law, respect for international law, and free and fair trade,” Macron said.
In the face of “the upheavals our societies are suffering,” among which he cited “threats to sovereignty,” Carney called for “building a new alliance” that would materialize in different sectors, such as Artificial Intelligence or trade, and that “will strengthen collective resilience so that people can live as they choose, based on shared values.”
Both leaders gave special importance to possible exchanges in the energy field, at a time when Canada is developing new liquefied gas projects and Europe is looking for new supply sources in the face of problems in the Middle East, which are driving up fuel prices.
Carney called for cooperation in the development of AI between both countries which, he said, lead the development of these technologies alongside the United States and China.
Carney’s visit to Saint Pierre and Miquelon has high political significance and comes after Trump published a map in which this French archipelago was covered by the United States flag, to which Macron responded by defending French sovereignty over the territory.
The Canadian Prime Minister reiterated this sovereignty over islands that are barely 19 kilometers from its coasts and whose territorial waters have been delimited since 1992 after years of conflict between both countries.
