China's embassy described the US comments as an expression of “supremacy and hegemony” and asserted that they sought to discredit the economic cooperation between Mexico and China.

The Embassy of China in Mexico accused the US diplomatic mission of attempting to generate divisions between the two countries through a message spread during the celebrations of Mexican Independence.

The protest arose from a message published on September 15 by the US Embassy with the phrase “Viva México, Made in China,” referring to the foreign origin of the fireworks and other products used during the patriotic festivities.

In a “Solemn Declaration,” the Chinese mission held that the message ignored elementary norms of diplomatic courtesy and disrespected the Mexican people.

The Embassy also reproached the United States for taking advantage of one of Mexico’s main national dates to question a third nation, instead of sending congratulations.

Beijing also defended Mexico’s right, as an independent state, to freely establish its commercial relations.

The Embassy recalled that exchanges between Mexico and China have a history of more than four centuries, linked to the Nao de China (the Manila Galleon), when Asian products such as silk and porcelain were exchanged for Mexican silver.

According to the Chinese position, that historical relationship represents a process of exchange and learning between the two societies.

Beijing Accuses Washington of Using the Mexican Celebration

The Chinese Embassy held that the US publication turned the Mexican national celebration into a stage for the geopolitical dispute between Washington and Beijing.

In its declaration, it described the US comments as an expression of “supremacy and hegemony” and asserted that they sought to discredit the economic cooperation between Mexico and China.

Finally, the Chinese mission asked its US counterpart to respect the host country and to focus on strengthening the ties between the two peoples.

It also questioned what it described as an attempt to “sow discord and division,” and held that this strategy would end up harming those who promote it.

The controversy occurs in a context of tension over the commercial and geopolitical relations among the United States, Mexico, and China, with Washington recurrently questioning the presence of Chinese products and investments in Mexican territory.
