Sudan’s Special Forces announced this Saturday that the Army and its support forces have recovered seventeen areas in the states of North Kordofan and West Kordofan in the last 72 hours, in an offensive that, according to authorities, has taken government troops to the borders of Darfur.

In a statement, the Special Forces, made up of the Army, intelligence services and popular resistance groups, assured that the ground operation in Kordofan “is advancing rapidly” and that government forces are “about to enter Darfur.”
“The armed forces, joint forces and support battalions have made significant progress and have managed to regain control of seventeen areas, mainly in the state of North Kordofan,” the statement said, adding that the troops are now near Darfur.
The Special Forces also affirmed that the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has suffered “heavy losses,” including dozens of combat vehicles and numerous dead or wounded fighters, and assured that the paramilitaries withdrew before the Army’s advance westward. The offensive seeks to open an avenue of advance towards Darfur through the old Forty Road, a rugged desert corridor that connects the Darfur and Kordofan regions that, according to the note, the RSF used during their presence in the capital, Khartoum, to transport fighters and military equipment from Darfur to the battlefronts in the capital.

In parallel to the military advances, the West Kordofan Emergency Chamber denounced that the RSF ordered dozens of patients to leave six hospitals and health centers in the region to make space for more than 340 wounded from the fighting.
According to the organization, Al Fula Hospital received about eighty wounded, while Al Nahud Hospital hosted another 75 and Ghabish Hospital a hundred.In addition, the Ayal Bajit Health Center, in the town of Al Juwai, received about forty wounded and the Umm Marahik Health Center another 45.
The new advances of the Army occur at a time of intensification of fighting for control of Kordofan, a key region for communications between central and western Sudan and one of the main fronts of the war that has pitted the Army and the RSF against each other since April 2023.
The dispute over this region is especially relevant due to its proximity to Darfur, where the RSF maintains a significant presence, and due to the role of its communication routes in the movement of troops and supplies between the different areas of the conflict. The war has caused one of the largest humanitarian and displacement crises in the world, with millions of people forced to leave their homes since the beginning of the fighting.
