In a joint statement (here in Greek) on developments in Greek-Turkish relations, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) state:
“The dangerous developments unfolding in our region, which lies close to and is affected by the fronts of imperialist wars and plans in Ukraine and the Persian Gulf, are triggering a chain of alarming developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean and Greek-Turkish relations.
This is because relations between the two countries, currently shaped by the rivalries and plans of their respective ruling bourgeois classes, are also intertwined with the interests of other bourgeois classes and imperialist powers, including the United States, NATO and the European Union.
Against this backdrop, Greek-Turkish relations have increasingly been affected by the growing tensions between the bourgeois classes of Turkey and Israel, as well as by the strengthening of political, military and economic ties between the bourgeois classes of Greece and Israel, creating dangers for the peoples.
At the heart of this tangled web of contradictions lies the question of how the ruling classes and monopolies will divide the region’s energy resources, determine the routes for transporting energy and commodities, and strengthen their positions within the global imperialist system.
These rivalries have nothing to do with the interests of the working class and the peoples of Greece and Turkey! Workers and capital are not all in the same boat! It is the working people of both countries who suffer the painful consequences of preparations for war and risk becoming cannon fodder in bloody conflicts that may erupt over interests that are not their own — the profits and interests of the bosses, the capitalists and the monopolies.
The Communist Party of Greece and the Communist Party of Turkey, guided by proletarian internationalism and internationalist solidarity and representing the interests of workers and the people, struggle against:
Military expenditure and preparations for war.
Nationalism and racism.
Violations of borders, challenges to the international treaties that have established the borders in the region, and threats of every kind.
Furthermore, we condemn attempts to impose faits accomplis in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean through military force, as well as the arms race between the two countries, which lays the groundwork for military confrontation.
We uphold the position that borders and the treaties defining them must not be changed.
We struggle to end the involvement of both countries in imperialist plans and to secure the return of their military forces from NATO and other imperialist missions abroad.
We fight for our countries’ disengagement from the imperialist alliances of NATO and the EU, for the removal of US and NATO military bases from our countries, and against the relations of both countries with Israel, the state that is murdering the Palestinian people.
The Communist Parties of Greece and Turkey address the working class and other popular strata, stressing that it is now necessary to intensify the common struggle of the two peoples against the plans of the bourgeois classes and imperialist alliances.
We demand that the will of the two neighbouring peoples be respected: they want and demand to live in peace. Through their common struggle, they can take the initiative and open the way to the overthrow of the system of exploitation and war, towards a new socialist society”.
