A drone attributed by Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom to the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck the cooling tower of power unit No. 1 at Russia’s Kursk-2 nuclear power plant on Thursday, causing minor damage without affecting operations.

Rosatom said in a statement released Friday that the enemy drone detonated on impact on September 17. The unit, however, continues operating at 100% of its capacity, the corporation said. Operational safety is guaranteed and the radiation background remains within normal values, according to the text.

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the event, stating the tower was hit early Thursday. The IAEA said it was reported that the unit was operating at that time, but its mode of operation did not change and there was no fire. The UN agency did not provide details on the origin of the device or the circumstances of the incident.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that all attacks against nuclear facilities are “unacceptable,” as they could endanger nuclear safety and security regardless of where they occur. He reiterated his call for “maximum military restraint” to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.

The incident comes amid a scenario of growing geopolitical friction, fueled by tensions over strategic infrastructure. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently reacted to Kiev’s threats of attacks targeting the energy infrastructure of the Russian Federation. Peskov said such threats by the Ukrainian regime are part of a line of continuous provocations aimed at prolonging and intensifying hostilities in the region. He recalled that previous plans formulated to strike key sectors of the national economy already constituted serious steps toward the deterioration of international security. Moscow has emphasized that lasting stability and halting a greater escalation will depend fundamentally on the cessation of offensives and cross-threats against essential public service facilities.
