South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Friday that his country will not deploy troops or military resources to join the U.S.-led war against Iran, in response to Washington’s calls for support for its military operations in West Asia.
“There will be no deployment that involves entering the war. I can assure you of that very clearly. We will not deploy military resources of any kind for that purpose,” Lee said during a press conference.

The president reaffirmed that Seoul will remain committed to the principle of not directly involving itself in the war. Donald Trump has directed open criticism at South Korea for its stance of not participating in the war against Iran and even affected joint military exercises planned with Seoul for this summer.
Earlier this month, South Korea considered the possibility of deploying military resources in the Strait of Hormuz with the aim of protecting its energy supply and responding to U.S. pressure.

“No sovereign and responsible country will submit to the pressure and blackmail of the United States to collaborate in the commission of acts of aggression and atrocious crimes against the great Iranian nation,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, who also warned that any military presence by other parties in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz will constitute direct support for the aggressor and will carry serious consequences.
