Historic 'Huachicol' Seizure in Guanajuato, Thanks to Setting Aside Political Differences and Tightening Coordination, Sheinbaum Says

More than 50 million liters of stolen fuel were seized as Guanajuato's daily homicides fell from over 12 to about four, a 75% drop.

Irapuato, Guanajuato. In highlighting the seizure of more than 50 million liters of fuel, President Claudia Sheinbaum stressed that this blow to huachicol (stolen fuel) was thanks to the coordination of the security cabinet, the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic, as well as the state security corporations and the state prosecutor’s office. In this context, she highlighted the close level of coordination with Governor Libia Denise García, which has made it possible to reduce the incidence of homicides in the state by 75 percent.

Both Sheinbaum and the state governor stressed that the reduction of insecurity in the state has been due to the fact that both sides have set aside political differences in order to tighten coordination not only on security, but also on infrastructure, education and water projects, as the president pointed out.

Sheinbaum emphasized that Guanajuato had been the most violent state in the country, with a daily average of more than twelve murders per day. However, she said that, following a meeting between the two governments, it was agreed to reinforce the security strategy in Guanajuato, which has made it possible to bring homicides down to four per day at present.

Yesterday there was a major fuel seizure that was the product of a new investigation by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), in coordination with Petróleos Mexicanos, the security cabinet, state security corporations and the state Attorney General’s Office. Sheinbaum stressed that this reflects important progress because it not only makes it possible to know where this illegal fuel comes from, but also where it was intended to be sold.

García asserted that the reduction in insecurity has been the result of the coordinated action of the Army, the National Guard, and the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection together with the state corporations.

The head of the executive secretariat of Public Security, Marcela Figueroa, stressed that from February 2025, when an average of 12.7 homicides per day was reached in Guanajuato, it has been possible to reduce it by 75 percent, to the point that in August 2026 it stood at 3.2 murders per day. In fact, she said, on an annualized level it went from an average of 12.3 per day in 2020 to four in 2026 as an annual average.

For his part, the Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, highlighted the levels of coordination achieved between the federal and state security institutions, which has made it possible to deal significant blows to the generators of violence in the state. He said that seizures of 2,095 weapons have been achieved and blows to organized crime worth 980 million pesos have been dealt.

García Harfuch praised the strategy against extortion implemented by the state government, which, in coordination with the federal authorities, has prevented gangs dedicated to extortion from receiving 101 million pesos.
