The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton will host Olympic and Paralympic rowing and sprint canoeing events in 2032.

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, has been confirmed as the venue for rowing and sprint canoeing at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, placing competitors on a waterway that is also a natural crocodile habitat.

The International Olympic Committee confirmed the venue after technical assessments by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA), which found that the river’s flow meets the operational requirements set by World Rowing.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said government agencies would introduce special environmental monitoring and control measures to protect participating delegations amid concerns about wildlife in the area.

The Fitzroy River is already used for training by members of Australia’s national rowing team and regularly hosts university competitions.

The Olympic Games in Australia are scheduled for July 23 to Aug. 8, 2032, while the Paralympic Games will take place from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5.

Holding events outside the main urban center is part of a strategy to decentralize competition venues and extend the sporting impact of the Games to regional communities.

National sporting committees will coordinate logistics ahead of the Games, including preparations for training under the region’s climatic and geographical conditions.
