Mexico City, September 17 (SinEmbargo).— Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, and Donald Trump, leader of the United States (U.S.), spoke yesterday about a possible bilateral trade agreement that, it is said, could be signed in the coming weeks. Two sources confirmed as much to SinEmbargo, though they said they were not authorized to reveal it. At least two international outlets also affirm it.
According to information revealed by Politico and Bloomberg, both U.S. outlets, the Mexican president and her counterpart from the neighboring country held a telephone conversation on Wednesday, in which they addressed the issue of binational trade.
A U.S. official, cited by Politico, described the talk between Sheinbaum and Trump as “constructive,” and asserted that the conversations between Mexico and the U.S. are advancing in a positive direction; the official also noted that any idea that the call did not go well is “mistaken.”
According to statements from a person familiar with the situation, mentioned by the same outlet, the call between Sheinbaum and Trump led Mexican officials to believe that the two could reach an arrangement to resolve the differences related to the Mexico–United States–Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The dialogue between President Sheinbaum and President Trump comes just days before the meeting between the negotiating teams of Mexico and the United States to continue the review of the USMCA, scheduled to take place on September 28 and 29 in Washington.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said that his administration is close to closing “a great deal” on trade with Mexico, this amid the negotiations between the two countries related to the USMCA.

Days earlier, the U.S. leader denied that the United States would withdraw from the trade agreement signed by the countries of North America and revealed his intention to reach an arrangement with the Mexican government before the midterm elections, which will be held this coming November 3.
When asked about Trump’s proposal, the Mexican Secretary of the Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, declined to confirm whether this will be possible, arguing that “it depends on many things.”
Faced with questions from the press, the head of the Secretariat of the Economy (SE) stressed that the possibility of reaching a trade agreement before the November elections in the U.S. is a proposal made by the U.S. president, although he did not confirm whether Mexico is willing to reach an arrangement.
