“You are witnessing an absolute assault on democracy.” A human rights lawyer was one of several arrested after trying to speak at a county meeting about its investments in Israeli bonds worth more than $1bn. Palestinian-American professor Noura Erakat was filmed being escorted out the county meeting by law enforcement officers in Palm Beach, Florida. County mayor Sara Baxter allegedly told constituents that the investments were a “policy matter” rather than a “budget matter” and barred speakers from addressing the issue. When Erakat and other critics of Israel’s genocide spoke anyway, they were forcibly led away. “This is a clear and obvious overturn of any kind of democratic order,” Erakat said in a video posted on Instagram.
