Mexico City, September 16 (SinEmbargo).— President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo affirmed this Wednesday that “Mexico does not bow down, does not kneel, and is not for sale.” The remarks came amid an atmosphere of tensions with the United States (US) and on the day commemorating the start of Mexican Independence.
“September 16, Independence Day, is the living memory of Mexico. It always means holding our heads high and shouting to the four winds that Mexico will never be anyone’s colony or protectorate. Long live Independence! Long live sovereignty! May Mexico live forever! Long live Mexico! Long live Mexico!” she said before the start of the 2026 Military Parade.

From the country’s capital Zócalo, Sheinbaum Pardo stressed that “Mexico was born from the rebellion of a people who refused to accept injustice as their destiny,” and that “independence was born of brave women and men who had the courage to defy power.”
In her message, she recalled that thanks to this feat, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla is known as “the Father of the Nation.” “Even today some have sought to diminish his heroism and his vision. Deep down, what they do not forgive him for is that he summoned independence through a true popular rebellion,” she noted.
At another point, she spoke of the importance of José María Morelos y Pavón in the independence process, since he “understood a fundamental truth: weapons can win battles, but only ideas can found nations.”
“On one side, one camp, the conservative one, centralist and monarchist in nature, which in its desperation applauded the foreign boot and brought in Maximilian of Habsburg. The other, the one of liberal, republican, and social-justice ideas, which chose to give its life rather than surrender,” she added.
“Because even though some might wish otherwise, Mexico cannot be understood without its noble, brave, and hardworking people. Nor can it be understood without its constant struggle for sovereignty and independence,” she maintained.
Finally, the President of Mexico added that “freedom is conquered, sovereignty is defended, and a just and dignified homeland is built every day.”
