Her statement takes on significance at a time when Trump seeks to impose U.S. hegemony in Latin America.

On Tuesday night, President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated her second “Cry of Independence” (Grito de Independencia) before thousands of people gathered in Zocalo Square in Mexico City.

At 11 p.m., Sheinbaum stepped onto the balcony of the National Palace with the Mexican flag to deliver the traditional Cry commemorating the 216th anniversary of the beginning of Mexico’s struggle for independence.

Before thousands of people in a packed Zocalo, the country’s largest public square, Sheinbaum recalled the call for emancipation from the Spanish Empire made by priest Miguel Hidalgo in 1810.

“Mexicans! Long live independence!” she said and then named the heroes of anti-colonial struggles, including Miguel Hidalgo, Josefa Ortiz Tellez-Giron, Jose Maria Morelos, Leona Vicario, Vicente Guerrero, Gertrudis Bocanegra, Guadalupe Victoria, and Antonia Nava.

Later, President Sheinbaum expanded the allocution to include the new architects of the Mexican nation and its enduring ideals.

“Long live Indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples!” “Long live our migrant sisters and brothers!” “Long live the dignity of the Mexican people!” “Long live freedom!” “Long live equality!” “Long live justice!” and “Long live democracy!”

At the conclusion of the ceremony from the Zocalo, Sheinbaum sent a clear message to the world: “Long live a free, independent and sovereign Mexico!”

Her final phrase took on special relevance at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump continues implementing a tariff war against his neighboring countries and also suggesting his interest in expanding the borders of the United States.
