Marielle Vive Trailer -- New Documentary by Emmy-nominee Mike Elk

$600 raised of $10,000 goal

In 2018, a college classmate of mine, Marielle Franco, was assassinated. A socialist Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman, she was assassinated by the former police chief of Rio and two politically powerful brothers, but finding out the truth wasn’t easy.

Activists marched and called out the right-wing Bolsonaro-allied governments that blocked the investigation into her death. Finally, when Lula became president of Brazil in 2023, he had the Brazilian federal police investigate the case and find out the truth.

For nearly a decade, I have struggled to get U.S. media outlets to pay attention to what happened to Marielle. However, the story of how working-class Brazilians fought back is one that is vital for Americans to hear at this time when they are fighting fascists in their own country.

Using my savings and what money I could crowdfund, I have spent the past four years filming the documentary “Marielle Vive”. It tells the story of how Marielle inspired new movements not just in urban areas like Rio, but also in rural areas, where groups in the Landless Workers movement occupied a farm and now run it as a collective, “Marielle Vive.”

Emmy-nominated labor reporter Mike Elk directs the film, with cinematography by the legendary Fernando Calvacanti and original music by Dedé Cadidé. We are proud to release our trailer, but we need your help to finish it.

For the first time, we are excited to share a trailer for our film, which draws on over 40 hours of filming in Brazil. To finish the film, we need to raise another $10,000 for more filming and editing.

U.S. corporate media has ignored this story of Brazilian courage, so we need regular workers to pitch in a few bucks.
