Science Minister Gil highlighted his country’s nuclear technology capabilities at the IAEA Conference in Vienna.
On Tuesday, Venezuelan Science and Technology Minister Yvan Gil and Abdulhamid Alkhalifa, president of the OPEC Fund for International Development, met in Vienna, Austria.

They discussed various cooperation mechanisms focused on addressing the challenges of climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean through scientific and technological initiatives.
Gil made the capabilities and infrastructure of Venezuela’s scientific R&D system available to the OPEC Fund. The offer seeks to advance joint projects aimed at providing technical and research-based responses to various environmental problems that are priorities for Caribbean countries.
They also analyzed the impact of climate change on Small Island Developing States in the Caribbean, with special attention to the phenomenon of the massive proliferation of sargassum. Gil noted that the increase in these algae has considerably affected tourism, a key activity for Latin American economies.

The Venezuelan minister valued the OPEC Fund’s commitment to promoting technical and financial collaboration, as well as its willingness to hold follow-up meetings and possible agreements that further favor bilateral ties.
In Vienna, Gil also highlighted Venezuelan capabilities for the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology during the 70th meeting of the Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to be held Sept. 14-18.
At this forum, Venezuela presented its advances in the areas of nuclear medicine, agriculture and environmental management, in the use of crop genetic improvement techniques, and in the training of professionals for the execution of innovative projects in the area.
Finally, Gil reiterated Venezuela’s willingness “to collaborate with other countries to promote a responsible and sustainable use of nuclear technology, contributing to the social and economic development of our nations.”
