The new factory will produce TNT to meet needs of Finland, NATO, and Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen announced that the United States will provide US$20 million to build a TNT explosives plant in Finland that will supply the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“We decided to build the TNT production plant to meet the critical needs of Finland and NATO. Strengthening our defense industrial base contributes to our overall defense and creates jobs and prosperity,” Häkkänen stated.

“U.S. financial support for this project is another demonstration of the deep defense cooperation between our countries,” he added.

Finland, which joined NATO in 2023, has also held talks with other allied nations about their possible participation in the project amid increased demand for explosives as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The Finnish Defense Ministry said the new plant will produce TNT to meet the needs of Finland and NATO and will allow it to “provide long-term support to Ukraine.”

Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is one of the most widely used explosives in the weapons industry for manufacturing artillery shells, bombs and grenades because it is inexpensive to produce, safe to handle and easy to melt before shells are filled.

The new plant, whose construction officially began Tuesday in the city of Pori on Finland’s west coast, will be operated by Forcit Oy, a Finnish explosives company for civilian and military use founded in 1893.
