Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez expressed his gratitude on Tuesday for the acts and events of solidarity with Cuba held over the weekend in various European cities, rejecting the United States’ policy of economic strangulation against the island.

“Demonstrations against the U.S. blockade in Bilbao; the ‘No War on Cuba’ vigil in Berlin; the gatherings and expressions of solidarity at the Fête de l’Humanité in France and at ManiFiesta in Ostend, Belgium, demonstrate that Cuba is not alone in its struggle against the collective punishment and silent genocide being carried out by the U.S. government against our people,” Rodríguez stated from the island.
The head of Cuban diplomacy noted that these activities serve as further evidence of the widespread international rejection of the U.S. policy of economic strangulation, implemented through an energy blockade, the intensification of the blockade, and secondary sanctions.
According to the report, Washington has imposed an oil blockade on Cuba since January and approved secondary sanctions in May. These measures have reduced foreign companies’ interest in doing business with the island and have contributed to the deterioration of its economic and energy situation.

Support from France and BRICS
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel highlighted on Monday the firm statements of solidarity with Cuba made by Fabien Roussel, National Secretary of the French Communist Party, during the 91st edition of the Fête de l’Humanité. Díaz-Canel described these expressions as a demonstration of the historic bonds of brotherhood between Cuba and France.
The Cuban government also expressed its gratitude this week to the BRICS member countries for approving a declaration regarding the situation on the island. Rodríguez noted that the document conveys the bloc’s concern and reflects the BRICS nations’ condemnation of and opposition to the imposition of unilateral coercive measures that violate international law.
Relations between Havana and Washington are experiencing their highest level of tension in decades, set against the backdrop of a deep internal crisis on the island and a U.S. policy of maximum pressure aimed at compelling the island to implement sweeping economic and political changes.
This situation unfolds against the backdrop of the United States having maintained an economic blockade against Cuba for 67 years and having expanded restrictions by imposing what it describes as a total blockade on fuel imports. In this context, pressure on foreign enterprises has led shipping lines, airlines, and hotel management companies—among others—to cease operations in Cuba.
