The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has scored a historic victory in the municipal elections in Nokha, in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district, winning a clear majority and securing control of the local administration.
According to results announced on September 14, the CPI(M) won 29 of the 45 wards in the Nokha municipality. India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 13 seats, while independent candidates won three. The Indian National Congress failed to win a single ward.
The result is particularly significant in Rajasthan, a northwestern Indian state where electoral politics has traditionally been dominated by the BJP and Congress. With its decisive majority, the CPI(M) is set to form the municipal administration in Nokha.
Nokha was by far the strongest result for the communists in the latest urban local elections. The CPI(M) reportedly won 38 municipal wards across Rajasthan, meaning that 29 of them came from Nokha alone.
The victory follows another important electoral breakthrough for the CPI(M) in Rajasthan. In India’s 2024 general election, veteran communist leader Amra Ram was elected to the national parliament from the Sikar constituency, returning CPI(M) representation from Rajasthan to the lower house of India’s Parliament.
The result in Nokha therefore represents a significant expansion of the CPI(M)’s presence in local government and a notable communist electoral victory in a state long dominated by India’s two major establishment parties.
