Latin American players once again feature prominently among the top contenders for Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Roberto Clemente Award, with several players included in the 30-man nominee list—including 14 first-time nominees—recognizing the player who best embodies baseball’s values ​​both on and off the field.

Among the initial nominees revealed this Monday are: Puerto Rican José Treviño (Cincinnati Reds); Venezuelan Joey Cantillo (Cleveland Guardians); Dominican Julio Rodríguez (Seattle Mariners); fellow Dominican Otto López (Miami Marlins); Nicaraguan Pablo López (Minnesota Twins); and Venezuelan Brandon Lowe (Pittsburgh Pirates).

Also appearing as first-time nominees are Zach Neto (Angels), Zack Gelof (Athletics), Austin Riley (Braves), Jordan Walker (Cardinals), Dansby Swanson (Cubs), Nasim Núñez (Nationals), Jake Burger (Rangers), Cedric Mullins (Rays), Garrett Whitlock (Red Sox), and Davis Martin (White Sox).

The list of thirty candidates also includes seven players who were selected for the 2026 All-Star Game. The winner of the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award was Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Considered one of MLB’s most prestigious individual honors, the award recognizes the player who balances exceptional character with a commitment to the community and philanthropic contributions both on and off the field.

The text reads, “We present the 30 players nominated for the 2026 Roberto Clemente Award.”

The award is named in honor of the legendary Roberto Clemente—a Puerto Rican, Hall of Famer, and fifteen-time All-Star—who died in 1972 during a humanitarian mission to Nicaragua. The award has borne his name since 1973; additionally, Roberto Clemente Day is celebrated annually on September 15, coinciding this year with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The thirty candidates will be recognized at their respective stadiums starting this Tuesday, and the online fan vote will count as one vote in the selection process, which concludes at the end of the regular season on September 27.

The winner will be determined by a panel comprising representatives from MLB, the networks that broadcast its games, MLB.com, the Hall of Fame, and Roberto Clemente’s sons—Enrique, Luis, and Roberto Jr.—with the award presentation scheduled for the 2026 World Series.
