Authorities Report Relocation Of More Than 86,000 Children After June 24 Earthquakes.
On Monday, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez joined the start of classes for the 2026-2027 school year at the Elias Toro National Basic School in Caracas.

During the event, Rodriguez paid tribute to the children and young people who lost their lives in the devastating double earthquake sequence on June 24, while welcoming more than 6 million students returning to classrooms across the country.
She highlighted the increase in school enrollment with the addition of more than 75,000 new children to classrooms. She also emphasized that the strategic goals for this school year include full enrollment, educational quality, and the completion of 200 school days, highlighting the responsibility of the Venezuelan state, which currently serves eight out of every 10 students in the public school system.
Regarding the damage caused by the seismic movements, Rodriguez reported that more than 86,000 children were relocated, 11 schools completely collapsed, and nearly 1,017 schools suffered damage of varying degrees. Nevertheless, authorities expect the comprehensive recovery of 1,500 educational centers during the current school year.
La Guaira: Gradual Return to Classrooms In The Hardest-Hit State
In La Guaira, the state hardest hit by the June 24 seismic event, educational institutions faced the process of reorganizing infrastructure to guarantee schooling.
In the Catia La Mar parish, the Jose Perez Chirino Education Center opened its doors, gradually receiving students ages 3 to 6 amid activities featuring music and traditional costumes.
Natalia Mayora, director of the early education center, reported that the institution received 50 children on its first day out of a total of 163, while also housing the Catia La Mar Preschool through relocation.
She highlighted that the educational institution is implementing a psychological support and assistance process coordinated between the La Guaira State Development Center and the Ministry of Education. The process involves teachers and parents and aims to overcome fear among children after the June earthquakes.
