Right-wing President Rodrigo Paz will submit a decree to Bolivia’s Legislative Assembly to extend the state of emergency for an additional 90 days. It has been in effect since June 20.

“We have to see what procedure will be followed in the Legislative Assembly for the extension. There is broad public consensus, and there is also consensus to approve the measure,” Interior Minister Marco Oviedo said.
On Sept. 10, the Plural Justice Commission of the Chamber of Deputies approved a draft resolution to extend the state of emergency for 90 days, in response to announcements of mobilizations by some social sectors and as a measure to preserve the country’s “economic recovery.”
Deputy Alejandro Medinaceli, of the ruling Christian Democratic Party (PDC), said that the resolution must be debated by the full Chamber of Deputies before the presidency of the Legislative Assembly calls a joint session with the Senate to discuss the extension.

Between May and June, the La Paz Peasants Federation and the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB) demanded President Paz’s resignation through road blockades, particularly in western and central Bolivia, with support also from groups aligned with former President Evo Morales (2006-2019).
The conflict caused shortages of food, fuel and medical oxygen in some cities and left at least 16 people dead, 13 of them because they did not receive timely medical attention due to the blockades. It also caused economic losses of more than US$3 billion.
After reaching agreements with social organizations such as the COB, Paz decreed a state of emergency on June 20 to lift the blockades. The measure is in effect for 90 days.
