Mikel Junior Sánchez Ortiz, a Venezuelan immigrant, was beaten and abducted by ICE on August 19 while driving to work with his girlfriend in Gainesville, Georgia. He is being held in Stewart Detention Center, where he struggles to eat due to the injuries he’s sustained. On August 29, BT sat down with Haklin Olivares, Ortiz’s girlfriend, who witnessed his assault and kidnapping. She reports he is pressured by authorities to self-deport. During our interview, Olivares calls Ortiz in detention, who said that when he told authorities of his violent assault, “they denied it and laughed.”
