More than 10,000 people marched through the streets of Dublin city center this Saturday to protest the visit of US President Donald Trump to the island this weekend and in defense of traditional Irish military neutrality.

This anti-war march, under the slogan ‘Trump, you are not welcome’, was organized by associations such as the Irish Neutrality League (INL), the Irish Anti-War Movement, and was attended by political parties such as the Irish Labour Party, and the leftist Sinn Féin – former political wing of the IRA – and People Before Profit.

The attendees set off in the early afternoon from the Garden of Remembrance, in honor of Irish people who died in different conflicts, heading towards Dublin city center and subsequently to the seat of the Irish Assembly (Dáil) shouting slogans against the US president and also directed at the country’s authorities for having allowed his visit.

“People are shouting, loud and clear, Donald Trump is not welcome here,” some said. Others used their voices to say that, instead of being on the Irish island, he should be in a court, behind bars, or to denounce that he is “complicit in genocide” in Gaza.

Now there are several thousands of protesters in Dublin.

Among the attendees, Palestinian flags and ‘kuffiyas’ (scarves) abounded, even more so than Irish ones.

Former Irish parliamentarian and activist Ailbhe Smyth took the microphone at the end of the march – along with other activists and singers – and shouted front of the crowd: “Why the hell would we want to welcome this trash (to Ireland)?” in reference to Trump, whom she also called “disgusting,” “misogynistic,” and “racist.”

In addition to Dublin, protests have also been organized around Shannon Airport, as well as in the vicinity of the golf complex in Doonbeg, for both today and tomorrow, Sunday.

Others carried inflatable effigies of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and a satirical statue of the president emerging from a dumpster with a banana peel on his head even appeared.

The US president arrived in Ireland this Saturday for an informal two-day visit to the island.

Throughout the morning, he met in Dublin with Irish President Catherine Connolly and the ‘taoiseach’ (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin, before attending the Irish Open golf tournament at one of his resorts in Doonbeg (western Ireland).
