Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a bilateral meeting this Saturday within the framework of the BRICS summit in New Delhi to consolidate the political and economic alliance between both nations.

“I had the opportunity to meet today with President Vladimir Putin for a constructive conversation on strengthening the strategic partnership between Ethiopia and Russia,” the Ethiopian head of government said in a statement after the meeting.

Abiy detailed that the dialogue ratified bilateral cooperation agreements in priority sectors for the development and security of both parties.

“Our conversations reaffirmed our shared commitment to advance cooperation in key areas, such as defense and security, trade and investment, education and technology,” the president said.

Abiy added that they explored ways to “expand educational exchanges and deepen collaboration in cultural ties and between both peoples.”

At the multilateral and economic level, the Ethiopian leader highlighted the coincidence in the environmental agenda and the increase in trade flow.

“We also discussed strengthening our cooperation on climate and development priorities, including collaboration ahead of COP32, as we work together to expand mutually beneficial trade and economic exchanges,” he said.

The meeting between Abiy and Putin joins the round of bilateral contacts deployed during the inaugural day of the eighteenth BRICS summit, where Ethiopia seeks to strengthen its strategic ties after its integration into the bloc.

The eighteenth BRICS summit, which will be held until Sunday, will have its agenda marked by the war in the Middle East, trade tensions and the difficulties in reaching consensus within a bloc expanded to eleven members.
