Spyros Chalvatzis, a veteran cadre of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and a prominent figure of the communist and popular movement, has passed away, 902 portal reports. Chalvatzis devoted decades of his life to the organized struggle through the ranks of the KKE, assuming important responsibilities in the Party.
He served as a member of the Political Bureau of the KKE Central Committee and was also elected to the Greek Parliament, where he served as the Party’s parliamentary representative.
Secretary of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) from 1979 to 1986, his political activity was closely connected with the struggles of workers and the popular movement, as well as with the preservation of the militant legacy of the anti-dictatorship struggle.
In later years he was active in the Association of Imprisoned and Exiled Resistance Fighters 1967–1974 (SFEA), serving as its president. In a 2020 declaration bearing his signature, SFEA stressed the continuing relevance of the Polytechnic uprising’s anti-imperialist slogans, including “Out with the USA – Out with NATO.”
Comrade Spyros, born in 1947 in Kozani, remained throughout his life committed to the KKE and to the ideals of the working-class movement, socialism and communism.
His death marks the loss of a communist who belonged to a generation of militants whose lives were inseparably linked with the struggles of the Party and the working people of Greece.
