Every day, President Claudia Sheinbaum gives a morning presidential press conference and Mexico Solidarity Media posts English language summaries, translated by Mexico Solidarity’s Pedro Gellert. Previous press conference summaries are available here.
Chiapas: Less Violence, More Peace and Well-BeingIn Chiapas, homicides fell by 64%, and the recovery of areas of the state made it possible to reopen schools and restore services provided by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the IMSS-Bienestar healthcare program. In addition, 267 “Jornadas por la Paz” (Days for Peace) events are strengthening the strategy to address the root causes of violence.
Mexico Is Doing Well: Employment and Economic Confidence GrowMexico remains among the OECD countries with the lowest unemployment rates. President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the country is doing well and will do even better, despite the international situation and U.S. tariffs. She also noted that the Economic Package was well received.
Strengthening Education in Public SchoolsSheinbaum explained that her criticism of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) stems from pedagogical, not political, differences, and that a math test alone does not reflect the quality of the entire education system. Nevertheless, math, reading, and writing will be reinforced.
INE: Elections with Certainty and Without ExcessesThe President described the 42 billion pesos (US$2.47 billion) requested by the National Electoral Institute (INE) for 2027 as “exaggerated,” compared to the 37 billion pesos (US$2.18 billion) she estimates based on 2024 figures plus inflation. She also called for clarification regarding unfolded ballots to ensure certainty and prevent irregularities.
Sovereignty: While Mexico Celebrates Its Independence, the PAN Is in EuropeThe President questioned the symbolism of National Action Party (PAN) leaders being in Europe as the election campaigns begin and ahead of the Independence Day celebration: “They have the right… but just as the election campaign is getting underway, they are in Europe. Well, that has its own symbolism,” she said.
