On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi ahead of the BRICS leaders’ summit.

Their meeting came 11 days after their face-to-face talks at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, where Modi urged to end the Ukrainian conflict.
Putin and Modi “shared perspectives on key regional and global issues of mutual interest, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers,” the Indian Foreign Affairs Ministry said.
“The two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, defense, energy, space, skills mobility and people-to-people exchange fields,” the statement added.

During the 45-minute meeting, Modi gave Putin a Russian translation of the Tirukkural, an ancient Indian ethical and philosophical treatise attributed to the sage Thiruvalluvar between 300 B.C. and A.D. 500. The work addresses principles of governance, virtue and compassion.
“This book will help us strengthen the human ties between our two countries. Its ideas about life and governance remain relevant to this day,” the Indian prime minister said. Putin, for his part, thanked him for the gesture and reaffirmed mutual trust: “With your comments, so it will be,” he emphasized.
The meeting in the Indian capital marked the second encounter between the two leaders in less than two weeks, following talks held Aug. 31 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
This week, the Kremlin had announced that the meeting would address defense and technology cooperation, including the modernization of BrahMos missiles, pending deliveries of S-400 systems, the possible sale of Su-57 fighter jets and civilian nuclear energy projects.
On Friday, Modi’s agenda also included a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during his first visit to India in eight years.
Modi will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will return to India after seven years, amid a gradual thaw between the two countries following years of border tensions in the Himalayas.
