The BRICS approach is to increase opportunities for businesses, the Indian PM stressed.
During the BRICS summit on Friday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended free trade and safe maritime routes at a time marked by wars and new economic barriers.

“While trade barriers are increasing around the world, India is building economic bridges. Since 2014, we have signed free trade agreements with nearly 40 countries around the world. Our approach in BRICS is to reduce barriers and increase opportunities for businesses,” he said.
“Global trade can advance only when maritime routes are safe, supply lines are open and the safety of sailors is guaranteed,” he added during his remarks at the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi.
India, one of the world’s largest suppliers of seafarers to the merchant marine, has repeatedly called for ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea, two areas affected by the U.S. war on Iran.

Modi also said BRICS is becoming an important hub for innovation and highlighted the bloc’s cooperation in agriculture, health, professional skills and smart grids.
“To connect startups and small and medium-sized enterprises with markets and financing, we have created the BRICS Incubator Network, the BRICS MSME Portal and the BRICS Startup Innovation Fund,” he said.
During the forum, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for progress in customs integration, reducing regulatory and administrative barriers, and developing shared industrial value chains, with the goal of ensuring that BRICS is no longer merely a space for the exchange of raw materials.
The BRICS leaders’ summit will be held Saturday and Sunday against the backdrop of the protectionist policies of U.S. President Donald Trump and his war on Iran.
