Clinton, Bush, Obama, Biden and Mamdani Gather to Remember 9/11 Victims

U.S. President Trump did not attend the ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial in New York.

On Friday, former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, along with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, attended a ceremony commemorating the victims of the 9/11 attacks at the National September 11 Memorial.

Around the reflecting pools that replaced the site where the Twin Towers once stood, other political figures also gathered, including former mayors Bill de Blasio and Rudy Giuliani, the latter of whom was in charge of the city when the attacks occurred.

Also present at the ceremony were former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; former first lady Michelle Obama; U.S. Vice President JD Vance; New York Gov. Kathy Hochul; U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz; and state Attorney General Letitia James.

Instead of attending the ceremony in New York, U.S. President Donald Trump chose to attend the event held at the Pentagon in the state of Virginia, where a third plane crashed on Sept. 11, killing 184 people.

A fourth plane crashed in an open field in Pennsylvania because of a revolt by passengers, who prevented it from flying to Washington, where its likely target was the White House or the Capitol.

All living, former presidents will be present

Twenty-five years later, the victims’ families gathered around the Memorial, and many of them in the crowd held up photographs of their loved ones who lost their lives that Sept. 11.

At 8:46 a.m., the moment the first plane struck the North Tower, and after a choir sang the U.S. national anthem, the ceremony officially began. The names of those who died were read, followed by several minutes of silence reserved for family members and government officials.

In addition to this ceremony, the Oculus will project, as it does every year, two columns of natural light onto the ground precisely on Sept. 11, briefly, at around 10:30 a.m. At night, two powerful beams of artificial light will be illuminated toward the sky, visible from all corners.

In addition to the victims of the attacks themselves, including plane crew members, tower workers, emergency personnel such as firefighters and passersby, thousands more people have died as a result of illnesses related to the pollution caused by the debris.
