Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will travel Friday to Rio Grande do Sul, where he will take part in a meeting on infrastructure for recovery and adaptation to extreme climate events, visit a federal campus and attend a campaign event.

The president will arrive in Canoas, where at 2:20 p.m. local time he will meet with Governor Eduardo Leite and the mayors of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo; Eldorado do Sul, Juliana Carvalho; and the host municipality, Airton Souza.

Later, the presidential agenda includes a visit at 3:50 p.m. to the Viamão campus of the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Sul, accompanied by Minister of Education Leonardo Barchini. The campus’s own headquarters was acquired by the federal government after the climate tragedy that struck the state in 2024 and currently serves about 1,200 students. The site also houses a Technopark with 13 resident companies, where projects related to technology and climate resilience are developed.

Rio Grande do Sul suffered in May 2024 the worst floods in its recent history, with hundreds of municipalities affected, thousands of people displaced and serious damage to homes, infrastructure and productive activities. The federal government then launched a set of emergency and recovery measures for the state, in addition to initiatives aimed at strengthening prevention and adaptation capacity in the face of extreme weather phenomena.

After completing his institutional agenda in Viamão, Lula will travel to Porto Alegre, where he will take part in the evening in a campaign event with political allies. The activity is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Largo Glênio Peres, in the Historic Center of the state capital, and will include the presence of candidates for legislative posts and the Senate, as well as the candidate for the Government of Rio Grande do Sul, Juliana Brizola.

Lula, the Workers’ Party candidate for reelection, is carrying out electoral activities ahead of the first round of the general elections, scheduled for October 4. Thus, the agenda in Rio Grande do Sul will combine official commitments related to reconstruction and climate adaptation with activities typical of the campaign for the elections.
