The election result in the poor, rural East German state of Saxony-Anhalt, home to just 2.1 million residents, has hit the German ruling class like a thunderclap. Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has won nearly 44 percent of the vote, up from just over 20 percent. The ruling CDU meanwhile fell from 37 percent to 17 percent. The voters have cast a damning judgement on the whole German establishment.
