At least 14 people were killed and an indeterminate number were injured this Wednesday in a massive explosion at a temporary arms depot in Sarmada, a town in the northern province of Idlib, Syria.

The explosion took place at a temporary storage site for armaments and war remnants, administered by the Ministry of Defense.

The site is used for the transitory storage of recovered weapons and military supplies before their final relocation.

Rescue teams are working to find any potential survivors, while specialized units from the Ministry of Defense have cordoned off the area to deactivate any unexploded ordnance scattered by the blast.

The series of secondary detonations caused moments of panic among the civilian population in nearby residential areas, particularly in the Al-Kamouna displaced camp located near the depot.

Security forces issued urgent alerts to residents due to the latent danger posed by active ammunition remnants scattered around the blast perimeter.

Third Explosion in a Month

The explosion in Sarmada is the third such incident in less than a month, highlighting the dangers of storing and handling munitions in densely populated areas.

The first incident occurred on September 1st, when a vehicle loaded with munitions exploded in the town of Binnish, resulting in five deaths and multiple injuries. The cause of the explosion and the origin of the material remain unclear. The second incident took place on August 21st, when an explosion in a residence in Ain al-Qasab, near Jisr al-Shughur, killed three civilians, including minors, and injured six others.

Preliminary reports from the Civil Defense attributed this third event to the presence of explosive material stored illegally in the building. For its part, the Syrian Ministry of Defense and local authorities are working to improve safety measures and prevent such incidents in the future.
