As we commemorate Mao on the 50th anniversary of his death it seems appropriate to take careful note of his critical role in the transformation of China from a suffering victim of foreign imperialism and domestic exploitation into a modernizing socialist state that rapidly and dramatically improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people.
