“Behind every statistic is a human face. Behind every measure of the blockade is a tragedy or a family drama.” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez spoke in Havana on Monday on the impacts of the US blockade and Trump’s fuel embargo. He reports a rise in infant mortality due to lack of access to basic medicine, equipment, and fuel to generate electricity. Rodríguez also noted a record $8.083 billion in economic damages caused by the blockade from March 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026 – surpassing the figures from the year before. The US has imposed a blockade on Cuba for over 60 years in an attempt to overthrow the government. Rodríguez has described the siege as “collective punishment.”
