The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela bestowed this Monday the Francisco de Miranda Order on the Vietnamese Ambassador, Vu Trung My, in recognition of his distinguished diplomatic service in the country.
Venezuela bestowed the Order of Francisco de Miranda, Generalísimo Grade, on Vietnam’s ambassador, Vu Trung My, on Monday, marking the conclusion of his diplomatic mission in the country and giving the government an opportunity to underscore what officials describe as a historic bond between the two nations.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez personally presented the honor at Miraflores Palace, framing it as recognition of the ambassador’s exceptional work and reaffirming Hanoi’s status as a priority strategic partner for Caracas.

Ambassador Vu Trung My, who holds a degree in Foreign Languages and a master’s in Political Science from the University of Havana, began his posting in Venezuela in May 2023, a period characterized as one of renewed momentum in bilateral relations.
Throughout his mission, My demonstrated a steadfast commitment to dialogue with Venezuelan authorities, fostering a close working relationship that advanced key areas of mutual interest.

Decades of Diplomatic Ties
Venezuela and Vietnam have maintained a relationship built on friendship, solidarity and mutual respect for nearly four decades, since diplomatic relations were first established on December 18, 1989, and later deepened when both countries opened resident embassies starting in 2006. Since then, joint efforts between the two governments have concentrated largely on building a strategic alliance spanning agriculture, energy and telecommunications.
Decades of diplomatic engagements have not only strengthened political ties but have also fostered a deeper cultural understanding between the peoples of both nations, organizing various cultural events, educational exchanges, and people-to-people connections. Moreover, both nations have cooperated on numerous multilateral platforms, advocating for issues that resonate with their respective people and interests.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez pointed to as evidence that the relationship has moved well beyond symbolic gestures into concrete cooperation. That cooperation was put to a practical test earlier this year, when Vietnam was among the countries that offered support to Venezuela following the double earthquake of June 24. Ambassador My’s legacy also includes fostering a spirit of mutual support during crises, as illustrated by the emergency response to natural disasters. Such collaborative efforts serve as a model for how nations can come together in times of need, showcasing solidarity in the face of adversity.
Hanoi’s response included dispatching 124 specialists and eight rescue dogs to assist with emergency operations, a contribution significant enough that Venezuela’s national government later honored the delegation with the “Hero of Venezuela” and “Service Merit” medals in recognition of their deployment across La Guaira and Caracas.

Trade Ties Set to Deepen
Beyond disaster relief, Vietnam has also contributed international humanitarian assistance in the form of supplies and equipment, further cementing a relationship that both governments now appear eager to formalize on a more structural level. That ambition is reflected in plans to advance the Fourth Intergovernmental Joint Commission for 2026–2030, an initiative aimed at expanding trade exchange, investment and what Venezuelan officials describe as productive sovereignty, suggesting that economic cooperation, rather than purely diplomatic gestures, will define the next phase of the relationship.
Monday’s ceremony, while formally marking the end of one diplomat’s tenure, was clearly also intended to signal continuity, with Rodríguez’s remarks emphasizing that the strategic partnership between Caracas and Hanoi is expected to keep expanding regardless of which individual occupies the ambassador’s post going forward.
As the ceremony unfolded, both the Venezuelan government and Ambassador Vu Trung My expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations. Discussions during the event included the potential for increased cultural exchanges, trade agreements, and joint ventures on tangible cooperation across agriculture, energy, telecommunications, disaster response and now an expanding trade agenda.
With a roadmap in place for the upcoming years, both countries are set to explore new avenues of partnership, aligning their strategic interests for mutual benefit.
