On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a message on Truth Social indicating his interest in renaming the state of New Mexico as New America.

“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State,” he stated in a message accompanied by an image showing the outline of the state, with the word “Mexico” crossed out in red and replaced with “America.”
CNN recalled that Trump has the authority to change the names of geographic features in the Geographic Names Information System, but he does not have the constitutional ability to legally change the name of states, as that process would have to be carried out within the state itself.
His eagerness to rewrite history and geography is already well known. On the first day of his second administration in January 2025, the MAGA politician used an executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Recently, the U.S. president suggested that the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime route through which 20% of the world’s oil passes, should be renamed “The Trump Strait.”
Now Trump wants to rename New Mexico to New America.

Shortly after the message was posted by the Republican leader, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham responded forcefully to the proposal to change the name of her state.
“New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate — it’s been ours since before the United States existed. What is up for debate? Who’s showing up for working families.
