Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, during a visit to Mexico, asserted that conservative movements fueled by “techno-fascism” on social media have established a new global order defined by barbarism and institutional contempt, while insisting that Latin America is not lost and remains in constant political struggle.

In an interview with La Jornada, Correa described the current international scenario as a “civilizational setback” directly attributable to the Trump Administration, characterized by a complete absence of rules, the collapse of multilateralism, and the imposition of the law of the strongest—conditions he said the region had not witnessed for decades in terms of disdain for institutionality and international law.

Despite the complex regional picture, the progressive leader highlighted that two of Latin America’s three largest economies, Brazil and Mexico under President Claudia Sheinbaum, remain in progressive hands, representing nearly 40% of the region combined.

Correa harshly criticized the continent’s ultra-conservative currents as a “primary and cave-dwelling” new right wing that rejects democracy and undermines integration. He further denounced the interference of far-right advisors, specifically citing Fernando Cerimedo, in regional electoral processes to advance White House-aligned agendas, mentioning Javier Milei in Argentina, Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, and Daniel Noboa in Ecuador. He added that while Colombia and Peru were lost, the results there were effectively ties, and asserted that Ecuador was stolen through “colossal fraud” with no ballot boxes opened.

Correa argued that “techno-fascism” operates tens of thousands of bots to poison public opinion and create false narratives, questioning the legitimacy of elections under such conditions and maintaining that democracy is impossible without truthful information—requiring controls on media mafias and social network manipulation. Specifically regarding Ecuador’s April 2025 election, in which Daniel Noboa defeated Luisa González, Correa claimed an orchestrated fraud involving the falsification of votes and the use of chemical agents on ballots through a “magic ink” transfer mechanism.
